Quality Inputs That Protect Your Investment and Guarantee Results
The effectiveness of every livestock improvement program, from AI-based genetic upgrading to high-performance dairy production, is directly dependent on the quality and reliability of the inputs used. Substandard semen causes failed inseminations. Contaminated liquid nitrogen compromises genetic material. Poorly calibrated insemination equipment reduces conception rates. Adulterated feed supplements undermine animal health. LDI’s Input Supply service exists to ensure that no farmer, technician, or processor in Ethiopia has to compromise on the quality of the inputs they use.
LDI is both a direct producer and distributor of key livestock inputs and a quality gateway for inputs entering the Ethiopian market through importation. By controlling quality at the source, in its own production and import evaluation processes, LDI protects stakeholders from the costs and frustrations of input failure.
Available Inputs Through LDI
Frozen Semen (Conventional): High-quality semen straws from LDI’s elite bull nucleus herd at HLDC, as well as imported semen from internationally certified studs. Available for cattle; expanding to small ruminants. Full breed and performance data available for each batch.
Sexed Semen: Gender-sorted semen providing over 90 percent accuracy for producing female calves. Primarily for dairy producers seeking rapid herd expansion with high-value dairy heifers.
Liquid Nitrogen (LN2): Produced at LDI and distributed nationally through LDI’s cold chain network. Essential for maintaining semen and embryo viability. Available in multiple container sizes for stations, farms, and mobile use.
AI Equipment and Consumables: Complete range of AI equipment including insemination guns (different designs for cattle), gloves, lubricants, speculums, and storage containers. All equipment meets international quality standards.
Hay and Dry Feed: High-quality hay produced at HLDC’s 55-hectare hay production area. Available for purchase by nucleus herd partners, elite bull programs, and commercial producers.
Mineral and Vitamin Premixes: Custom-formulated mineral and vitamin premix products tailored to the specific requirements of dairy cattle, poultry, and breeding bulls under Ethiopian production conditions.
Processing Inputs: Selected processing inputs for dairy, meat, honey, and feed processing operations, including starter cultures, coagulants, packaging materials, and laboratory reagents, sourced from certified suppliers.
Technical Support for Genetic Material Importers
- LDI provides regulatory and technical assistance to organizations importing livestock genetic materials (semen, embryos, fertile eggs) and related inputs. Services include:
- Pre-import quality verification:Review of supplier certifications, health certificates, and genetic performance data.
- Customs and phytosanitary guidance:Assistance with Ethiopian Agricultural Authority requirements and import permit applications.
- Laboratory testing of samples:Post-arrival quality testing for motility, viability, and pathogen screening.
- Post-import monitoring:Support for quarantine procedures and field performance tracking.
To access import support, submit an inquiry through the “Technical Advisory; Breed Improvement” form on the Contact Us page, marking “Importer Support” in the subject line.
Quality Assurance for Inputs
Every input distributed through LDI is subject to a rigorous quality assurance process before release. For semen produced at LDI, this includes comprehensive pre-freeze and post-thaw evaluation for progressive motility, morphology, viability, and microbial contamination. Imported inputs undergo evaluation against LDI’s quality specifications and must meet or exceed international standards before being approved for distribution. Quality certificates accompany every input shipment, providing users with verifiable documentation of the product’s quality status.
Technical Support for Input Importers
LDI provides technical advisory and quality evaluation services to organizations seeking to import livestock genetic materials and related inputs into Ethiopia. Services include: specification development for procurement; evaluation of supplier credentials and product quality documentation; laboratory testing of samples; regulatory guidance on importation requirements; and post-importation quality verification.
