Feed Production and Processing

The productivity of any livestock, regardless of genetic potential, is ultimately constrained by the quality and availability of feed. In Ethiopia, inadequate feed quantity and poor nutritional quality are among the most significant limiting factors for livestock productivity. LDI’s Feed Production and Processing services address this challenge through an integrated approach that combines on-farm production at HLDC with advisory, research, and training services for the broader feed sector.

At the Holeta Livestock Development Center, LDI operates an integrated feed production system managing 55 hectares of high-quality hay production and 4.13 hectares of specialized green feed, providing the nutritional foundation for the institute’s elite nucleus herds. The nutritional formulation used at HLDC, combining high-energy maize grain, wheat bran, shorts and middlings, premium Noug Seed Cake for protein, and precisely calibrated mineral and vitamin premixes, represents one of the most sophisticated livestock nutrition programs in Ethiopia.

  • Feed Formulation and Nutritional Advisory: Technical advisory services helping farmers, cooperatives, and feed manufacturers develop optimal rations for specific livestock species, production stages, and productivity targets. Advisory covers: energy and protein requirement calculation for different livestock classes; ingredient selection and sourcing from locally available materials; anti-nutritional factor management; feed additive evaluation and recommendation; and total mixed ration (TMR) design for high-producing dairy cows.
  • Feed Processing Technology Advisory: Technical guidance on feed milling, mixing, and processing technologies including: hammer mill and roller mill selection and operation; mixer efficiency and uniformity testing; pelletization for improved feed efficiency and palatability; and dust suppression and worker safety in feed mills.
  • Feed Quality Testing and Analysis: Laboratory services for feed quality characterization including: proximate analysis (dry matter, crude protein, crude fiber, ether extract, ash, nitrogen-free extract); neutral and acid detergent fiber analysis; energy content calculation; mineral and vitamin content; mycotoxin screening; and microbiological quality (total plate count, mold, Salmonella).
  • Hay Production and Conservation: Advisory on high-quality hay production from the most productive grass and legume species suited to Ethiopian conditions, including: species selection for different agro-ecological zones; cutting and harvesting at optimal maturity for nutritional quality; field curing, baling, and storage to minimize losses; and silage making as an alternative conservation strategy.
  • Feed Crop Production Advisory: Technical support for on-farm green feed and forage crop production including: species and variety selection; planting and management calendars; fertilization and irrigation requirements; and integration with livestock management systems.
  • Feed Processing Consultancy for Investors: Dedicated technical advisory for investors seeking to establish commercial feed manufacturing operations in Ethiopia; covering plant design, equipment selection, raw material sourcing strategy, formulation, quality control systems, and market linkage.
